It is no question that anime is not for anyone. There is times where people start watching anime with me all at the wrong time, but this time I am here to save you from starting something you know very little about.
Cowboy Bebop
This is probably the most obvious one. I remember this show coming on late night on adult swim on Cartoon Network. This anime takes place in 2071 in space. It follows a bounty hunter with a dark past going around taking on jobs trying to make ends meet. It does a great job combining Japanese animation with the country wild wild west theme, the only catch is, it takes place in space. Also, a short anime with only 26 episodes.
Dragon Ball
Here we follow a boy named Goku, who came from a different planet all the way to Earth. He learns martial arts and defends the Earth from being destroyed with his family and friends.
This show is probably the one that made anime known to more than the Japanese people. The story line is okay as it tends to have the same elements in every story when they fight a new villain. The powerups of the character is what makes the characters and is what set the standard for other anime to follow.
Naruto
Takes place in the ninja world. We follow a kid named Naruto Uzumaki as he tries to find his ninja way and become hokage, the leader of the village, even though everyone hates him because of what he possess in him.
The creator of this anime was actually inspired by Dragon Ball. So, in a way it also has the same elements to every story arch when they are fighting a new villain, but what makes this anime different is the way they play with your emotions. It does a great job drawing people into a character and then revealing something where your morals are tested. I probably like more of the villains in this anime then the actual heroes.
One Piece
The main character Monkey D. Luffy, journeys the sea wanting to become the pirate king. He gathers a crew who all bring something different to the table but together face anything thrown their way.
This anime has been on air since 1997 and is still going today! But because it is so long you are able to see how anime has evolved and with graphics. It had a great story line, character development and amazing action. Definitely worth a watch if you are willing to watch a lot of episodes.
