Die a Hero or Live a Villain

No matter where we go in life there is always an opportunity to learn something. Learning occurs everywhere. It can come from anything or anyone. We can learn from parents, relatives, teachers, or even complete strangers off the streets. We learn from social media, sometimes the news, and even entertainment. I wanted to introduce a fictional character that I have felt like I learned from.

One of my favorite characters throughout the Naruto series was Itachi Uchia. He was seen as a villain for most of the show though until later on in the show when we learned the truth about him. He was known throughout the Leaf Village as the man who slaughtered his own clan. An outcast really.

Now I understand you are probably wondering "you're saying that you learned from a man who murdered his entire family essentially?" And I would "yes" but not the way you would think. I did not go and learn a bunch of new ways to murder someone but learned values. Again, not murderous values.

Itachi's Fork in the Road

Itachi's clan was head of the police force of the Leaf Village. They were in charge of the safety of the village, but they were starting to grow restless with politics that were going on at the head of the Leaf Village. They grew so restless that they were going to stage a coup d'état. Itachi worked for the village as an ANBU, pretty much the secret service for the village. He did not agree with his clan trying to overthrow the head of the village because many lives would be lost over a disagreement. So, here we see the position that Itachi is put in. Choose to side with family and take innocent lives in the process or side with the village and take the lives of his own family.

Itachi decided to stand against his family because he knew what they were trying to do was wrong. Just because someone does not agree with you doesn't mean you should seek violence against them. But the only way to stop the Uchia clan was to take their lives. He hired a hit man to help him take out the clan. The only people Itachi killed was the love of his life and his parents. They were the only people who understood the position that he was in and supported his decision no matter what. He left his brother Sasuke alive and allowed the entire village to blame him for the murder of the Uchia clan.

Consequences

He ran from the village and joined a gang to get inside information on them because they were also trying to attack the village later on. This man Itachi took the blame for everything and was labeled as a murderer and a criminal just to save this village that would turn their back on him. Later on we learned of what he did for the village and Naruto asked him why he didn't tell the villagers the truth to clear his name. So, he could've been there to raise his brother. Itachi replied "Self-sacrifice... A nameless shinobi who protects peace within its shadow. That is a true shinobi."

Itachi did not need to be recognized by the people of the village. He needed to know himself that what he was doing was right for himself. He choose his clans life over thousands that could have been lost. He could have been mad at the village for making him take them blame like that but instead he went on and continued to help the Leaf Village by giving them information about another threat to them. While doing all this he continued to watch over his brother and helped him as he died.

Lessons Learned

The reason I say that I learned so much from this man even though he is just a fictional character is because I try to make that my morals as well. Choosing the right even if means standing against people you love. Even if people label you as all these terrible things, as long as you know that what you did was the right thing to do that is all that matters. "Those who forgive themselves, and are able to accept their true nature... They are the strong ones!" - Itachi Uchia
